In

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt

of Your Lordship's despatch No.161 dated 11th June on the subject of the alleged sale of a child named Leung Mee. January of this year a girl of a similar name was voluntarily returned to her parents, and this was one of the fifty-two cases of the kind which came to the notice of the Secretary for Chinese Affairs as reported in the 3rd paragraph of my

despatch No.335 of 25th June.

2.

The information in this case came from the

local "Anti-Muitsai Society" by whom it was alleged that the sale of the child had taken place three years previously, when the girl was seven years old, and that the price paid was $95 Canton currency. There was no evidence that such a transaction had taken place in this Colony, and the specific mention of Canton currency makes it almost certain

that this was not the case. No action was therefore taken against the alleged purchaser at the time of the voluntary restoration of the girl to her mother.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

LORD PASSFIELD,

I have the honour to be,

My Lord,

Your Lordship's most obedient,

humble servant,
